What is a tree planting event?

Tree planting combines integration and climate action

The tree planting event for immigrants, which started in 2022, was launched by Moniheli ry, Finland's largest multicultural network, and the Martha organisation. The event has been implemented by the organisations' joint Luontokoti project.

The main objective of the planting campaign has been to develop a concept that will allow the tree planting event to be integrated into the integration activities of Finnish municipalities. In practice, tree planting combines integration and climate action, while symbolically planting roots in a new homeland.

In the first year, around 100 tree saplings were planted in Helsinki Central Park. In 2023, tree planting events were organised in eight different locations (Helsinki, Vantaa, Espoo, Tampere, Lappeenranta, Järvenpää, Jämsä and Kankaanpää) during one week. The target was to plant a total of 1000 trees, but this was almost tripled due to the popularity of the events.

Moniheli ry

Moniheli is the largest multicultural network in Finland, with around 150 member associations. We support immigrants, integration and social inclusion and promote equality.

Luontokoti Project

The Luontokoti project, a joint project of Moniheli and the Marttaliitto, integrates immigrants into Finnish nature and home gardens.

Maahan muuttaneet kuntalaiset istuttavat paitsi puuntaimia, myös juuria uuteen kotimaahan. Puunistutustapahtumassa suomalainen kulttuuriperinne ja luonnossa liikkuminen yhdistyvät monikulttuurisuuteen ja yhteisöllisyyden rakentamiseen. Puita istuttamalla tuetaan maahan muuttaneiden kototumista konkreettisella tavalla. Tavoitteena on myös lisätä heidän osallisuuttaan ilmastonmuutoksen torjunnassa ja aiheesta käytävässä keskustelussa.
