Who am I?

My name is Samah, and I am responsible for the Arabic language activities of the OmaPolku project, in this capacity I work as a peer teacher and project worker. I came to Finland in 2018 as a graduate student in the master’s Programme in Health Sciences (MSc). Studying at a Finnish university opened my eyes to the differences in the Finnish educational system when compared to the practices of my home country of Palestine. This increased my appreciation for the opportunity I got here. The Finnish educational system is progressive and flexible, and students are given the freedom to choose an individually suitable study path, during which the teaching staff offers continuous academic and social support. 

Joining the OmaPolku project

After graduation, I got involved in youth work at Mirsal ry, which is one of Moniheli ry's active member organizations. This opened the way for me to interact with students from immigrant backgrounds. In the youth work, I heard many stories about the influence parents had on future study and work decisions, which also reminded me of my personal experiences. So, when I had the opportunity to apply for a job in the project, I didn't hesitate, because I wanted to be involved in changing the stereotype that exists among some -that there is only one educational path- and I wanted to highlight the role of parents in a positive way through sharing my personal experience.

New opportunities and challenges - the meaning of the OmaPolku project for myself and others 

Working in the OmaPolku project opens the opportunity to listen to the experiences and stories of many immigrants in Finnish society and helps to bridge gaps between parents, students, and the school. It also develops my social and practical skills, whether it is one-on-one interaction with parents or communication with associations when we discuss ways of cooperation between us. In addition, it improves the skill of effectively getting to focused dialogue in a limited time. Limited time requires more effort to gain parents' trust and to share their personal experiences about themselves and their children. 

One of the advantages of leading peer groups is the opportunity to share information with parents in their native language. In addition, it is possible to simplify and present concepts considering the parents' backgrounds and what they are used to in their previous home countries, as well as comparing the Finnish educational system with what they are used to. In our project, we focus on the fact that the path of the educational process is not the same for everyone, instead, there are several different ways to reach the same final goal. This goal is to create an educated and balanced generation that enjoys an educational process that suits their abilities and interests. It's always nice to feel like we've provided new information that a parent didn't know, or that we've been able to offer suggestions that can solve their child's problem. However, sometimes the questions are too complicated, and a quick guidance solution cannot be found. Nevertheless, we guide parents to the right door where they can find suitable expert advice. 

One of the biggest challenges for newcomer parents is the amount of raw information they must process when enrolling their child in a school system that may be completely new to them. Another challenge is the language barrier and the difficulty of using the school's online services. In addition, the parent’s expectations of the school's role in educating their children and what happens on the ground often differ, and this can form a gap between the parents and the system. 

Future goals and working toward them 

Our task is to bridge this gap as much as possible. Of course, it won't be easy, but we are taking small steps toward the greatest possible improvement. Bridging the gap requires special efforts on both sides, starting with parents -who with materials in their own languages- putting effort and time into understanding the current system, and schools which put greater effort into understanding the cultural differences between people from different backgrounds. Our role in this project complements building bridges between these parties, and I hope to be a positive addition to the project by supporting Arabic-speaking parents every step of the way. 

من أنا؟ 

 اسمي سماح، وأنا مسؤولة عن أنشطة اللغة العربية في مشروع OmaPolku، حيث أعمل كموجه للأقران ومنسق مشروع. أتيت إلى فنلندا في 2018 كطالبة دراسات عليا لإكمال درجة الماجستير في العلوم الصحية. فتحت الدراسة في إحدى الجامعات الفنلندية عيني على الاختلافات بين نظام التعليم الفنلندي وما اعتدت عليه في بلدي الأم فلسطين. زاد هذا من تقديري للفرصة التي أتيحت لي هنا. النظام التعليمي الفنلندي متطور ومرن، ويتم منح الطلاب المساحة لاختيار مسار الدراسة المناسب لهم شكل فردي، كما يقدم أعضاء هيئة التدريس الدعم الأكاديمي والاجتماعي بشكل مستمر. 

انضمامي إلى مشروع OmaPolku 

بعد التخرج، انخرطت في العمل الشبابي تحت مظلة جمعية مرسال، إحدى المنظمات النشطة التابعة لمؤسسة موني هيلي.  مما أتاح لي الفرصة للتواصل مع طلاب من خلفيات مهاجرة وسماع العديد من التجارب الأكاديمية وتأثير الوالدين على قرارات الدراسة والعمل المستقبلية، والتي ذكّرتني أيضاً بتجربتي الشخصية. لذا عندما أتيحت لي الفرصة للتقدم لوظيفة في المشروع، لم أتردد، لأنني أردت أن أشارك في تغيير الصورة النمطية الموجودة لدى البعض – أن المسار التعليمي هو واحد فقط – وأردت تعزيز دور الوالدين بطريقة إيجابية وفعالة. 

فرص وتحديات جديدة – OmaPolku بالنسبة لي وللآخرين 

يتيح العمل في مشروع OmaPolku الفرصة للاستماع إلى التحديات التي تواجه المهاجرين في المجتمع الفنلندي والمساهمة في محاولة سد الفجوات بين أولياء الأمور والطلاب والمدرسة. كما يطور مهاراتي الاجتماعية والعملية، سواء كان ذلك من خلال إدارة الحوار في مجموعات أولياء الأمور أو عند التواصل مع الجمعيات لمناقشة سبل التعاون بيننا. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، فإنه يحسن مهارة تنظيم النقاش بفعالية خلال وقت محدود، والذي يتطلب مزيداً من الجهد لكسب ثقة الوالدين بشكل يتيح لهم مشاركة خبراتهم الشخصية حول أنفسهم وأطفالهم. 

تكمن أهمية مجموعات الأقران في إتاحة الفرصة لمشاركة المعلومات مع الآباء بلغتهم الأم. بالإضافة إلى تقريب المفاهيم وتقديمها بما يتناسب مع خلفيات الوالدين وتجاربهم في بلدانهم الأصلية السابقة، وكذلك مقارنة النظام التعليمي الفنلندي بما اعتادوا عليه. في مشروعنا، نركز على حقيقة أن مسار العملية التعليمية متنوع وغير محصور بطريق واحد، بل بعدة طرق مختلفة للوصول إلى نفس الهدف النهائي. هذا الهدف هو خلق جيل متعلم ومتوازن يتمتع بعملية تربوية تناسب قدراته واهتماماته. من الجيد دائمًا الشعور بأننا قدمنا معلومات جديدة لم يكن أحد الوالدين يعرفها، أو أننا تمكنا من تقديم اقتراحات يمكن أن تحل بعض المشاكل. ومع ذلك، في بعض الأحيان تكون الأسئلة معقدة ولا يمكن العثور على حل توجيهي سريع. وفي هذه الحالة، نقوم بتوجيه الآباء إلى الباب الصحيح حيث يمكنهم العثور على المشورة المناسبة من الخبراء. 

أحد أكبر التحديات التي تواجه الوافدين الجدد هو كمية المعلومات الأولية التي يتعين عليهم معالجتها عند تسجيل طفلهم في نظام مدرسي قد يكون جديدًا تمامًا بالنسبة لهم. التحدي الآخر هو حاجز اللغة وصعوبة استخدام خدمات المدرسة عبر الإنترنت. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، غالبًا ما تختلف توقعات أولياء الأمور بشأن دور المدرسة في تعليم أطفالهم وما يحدث بالفعل على أرض الواقع، مما يشكل فجوة بين الآباء والنظام. 

الأهداف المستقبلية والعمل عليها 

مهمتنا هي سد هذه الفجوة قدر الإمكان. بالطبع، لن يكون الأمر سهلاً، لكننا نتخذ خطوات صغيرة نحو أكبر قدر ممكن من التحسين. يتطلب سد الفجوة جهودًا خاصة على كلا الجانبين، بدءًا من أولياء الأمور حيث يترتب عليهم بذل الجهد والوقت لفهم النظام الحالي خصوصاً مع توافر المواد التوعوية بلغتهم الأم. وأيضاً، يتوجب على المدارس التي تكون أكثر قابلية لفهم الاختلافات الثقافية بين الأشخاص من خلفيات مختلفة مع الوقت. ويكمل دورنا في هذا المشروع في بناء جسور بين هذه الأطراف، وآمل أن أكون إضافة إيجابية للمشروع من خلال دعم الآباء الناطقين
