In Finland, the Somalia Network strengthens the capacity of its member organizations with the goal of improving the quality of development cooperation and organizational activities. We organize training sessions to equip members with skills in good governance and to learn more about themes related to the work of organizations, such as gender equality and disability.
A significant part of our work in Finland is to support the participation and influence of young people, especially those from immigrant backgrounds, and to increase their interest in global issues. We also encourage young people to engage in the work of organizations and volunteer activities. The Youth Committee, which has been operating since 2020, is open to all 16-29-year-olds interested in the network's activities and influencing them.
Membership in the network is open to anyone who wishes to promote the association's objectives. The majority of the organizations operating within the network were founded by Somali individuals in Finland, but there are also long-established Finnish organizations involved in development cooperation in the Horn of Africa.
The majority of the network's funding comes from state grants awarded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for civil society development cooperation and communication and global education. The youth project of the network is implemented with a state grant provided by STEA. The network's own contribution is 15% of total costs in development cooperation projects and 10% in VGK projects. Self-financing consists of contributions from member organizations participating in joint projects, other partners, and the network's own share, as well as voluntary work. All donations, volunteers, and members play a crucial role in ensuring that the projects can be carried out as planned.
The network has a fundraising permit granted by the Police Administration.
