Originally formed as an informal group of international psychologists and psychotherapists in May 2018, the association aimed to connect professionals in similar situations, network, and discuss practice issues. The group's main discussion points were:
- Registration as a psychologist or psychotherapist in Finland through VALVIRA (healthcare registration authority).
- Difficulties in working with different client groups, such as those with financial constraints, due to registration issues with VALVIRA.
- Lack of support and information for professionals in Finland, including challenges related to registration, and the need for guidance on working, training, and professional support in Finland.
- The significant demand for foreign language professionals in Finland and how to address the needs of foreign-born and foreign language speakers (e.g., helping clients find therapists who speak specific languages).
The aims of the association are:
- To promote the interests of mental health professionals trained abroad by supporting each other with VALVIRA registration through information sharing and practical help.
- To develop and maintain the professional skills of its members by offering ongoing training in English, organizing workshops, and hosting speaking events.
- To act as a liaison between members by providing information sharing platforms, such as a website, to facilitate communication.
- To promote networking among colleagues.
